And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” - Luke 23:42

How can I understand the Bible when I read it?

Answer: Believe in Jesus Christ BEFORE you open the Bible. Believe and express your specific understanding that the Bible is the inerrant and infallible words of God for our blessing.

Upon awakening each and every morning, begin your first conscious thoughts with the following affirmations of God’s words and your petition asking the Holy Spirit would be pleased to reveal Truth to you as you read His Words.

Begin by declaring your complete belief of His truths recorded the Bible: – Hebrews 6:18 It is impossible for God to lie!

Next, ask for the Holy Spirit to declare to you personally today and everyday His truth of:

  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
  • Luke 11:11-13 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
  • Psalm 43:3 Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; Let them bring me to Your holy hill And to Your tabernacle.
  • John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

[Anything the Bible repeats twice is surely the truth of inestimable value! Jesus repeated this truth twice in the very same conversation!]

  • John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

[Our need for fresh Bread from heaven every day: Exodus 16:4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not. 5 And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”]

Now, with complete confidence and joy, open your Bible, asking for fresh “manna from heaven” and read what the Holy Spirit is pleased to provide for you this day.

If you are having a dry spot where your heart lacks the certain attractiveness to the Words you are reading, pause, and pick up one or all of the following:

  • Your favorite Hymnal and begin to read/sing songs such as Amazing Grace or Just As I Am.
  • Read again you’re “I Believe!” statement that was your entrance into the Kingdom of God through your “new birth” experience.
  • Then read again how Jehoshaphat [ 2 Chronicles 20:21 ] sent the singers out before the soldiers into the battle. Remember you are in a battle where the world, flesh and the devil will make every attempt to prevent you from drawing close to Jesus and reading His precious Words. The very best way to overcome in this battle is to begin singing of the loveliness of Jesus and to praise God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
