“Jesus wept!” – What is the significance of this statement?
– John 11:33-35 Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. And He said, “Where have you laid him?”They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus wept.
Weeping, or crying, is a human response to overwhelming emotions of both sorrow and joy. Weeping is one of the most basic and common of the emotional connecting links which join all humanity.
Jesus, as God-Man, wept. Jesus weeping illustrates His perfect love and compassion for the misery of His human creation since sin entered into the human bloodstream. When sin entered into the world through Adam and Eve’s disobedience and willful rejection of God’s commandment, sin has continually produced pain, sorrow and suffering to ALL humanity.
If you trust and follow Jesus, your Creator, do you realize that He will weep WITH YOU in your pain-filled earthly journey?
- Hebrews 4:13-15 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
- Matthew 8:16-17 When evening had come, they brought to Him [Jesus] many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.”
- John 11:33-44 Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. And He said, “Where have you laid him?”They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!” And some of them said, “Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?” Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.” Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”
Jesus, as omniscient God, knowing all things from past to the present and future, also wept.
Jesus clearly foresaw the unending pain and suffering coming upon ALL THOSE who refuse to believe, trust and follow Him. Jesus wept because He could give them eternal life in perfect joy if only these people would exercise their “free-will” and choose to love and follow Him. Imagine, there are no tears ever in heaven!
If you reject Jesus, He will still weep, but, He will WEEP FOR YOU because you have chosen to continue on the path toward a tragic destination of eternal pain and sorrow in hell.
- Luke 19:41-44 Now as He [Jesus] drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
All humanity will suffer in their lifetime on earth. Some of this suffering is forced upon us by the actions of other people, but many of our tears come as a result of our wrong choices where we exclude or ignore God. Without fail, all sin produces pain-filled consequences.
There is ONE SUPREME decision that guarantees our tears and pain on earth will NOT be wasted. What is it? It is the decision the Philippian Jailer made when confronted about this truth; the Lord Jesus Christ can save ANYBODY!
- Acts 16:29-34 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes.
And immediately he and all his family were baptized. Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.
This decision did NOT guarantee that he would never again shed tears on earth, but it did guarantee that he and his family would never again shed even ONE SINGLE TEAR after their death and taken into heaven to be with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
- Revelation 21:3-4 Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
How can we be assured that Jesus’ family members will have no tears in heaven?
Jesus the God-Man wept in the Garden of Gethsemane. When He was strengthened, He went all the way to the Cross of Crucifixion and separation. Through His death, Jesus the perfect Man covered the sins of ALL who would believe, trust and follow Him. Hebrew 6:18 assures us with these words, “it is impossible for God to lie”.
- Luke 19:41-44 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly.
Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
- John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit [His body died].
Jesus died so that we could be reconciled to Holy God and that He would forever wipe away every tear from our eyes.
Now the choice has been given to you and to me. Will we gratefully receive Jesus’ tears on our behalf and death as our substitute for the death we deserved for our sins?
Can anyone in their right mind reject such a Love offer from Jesus?
Will you choose to believe, trust, love and follow Jesus Christ?
