And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” - Luke 23:42

I am an Athiest, how can you expect me to accept what you believe?

If I don’t believe in the existence of God or an afterlife, how can you expect me to understand or accept what you believe?

Dear Friend,

Your question is a good one and contains a correct conclusion. In truth we do NOT expect you to understand or accept our words because you have rejected

God’s clear general revelation of Himself through His Creation [Nature] and through your own Conscience.

God has chosen to reveal Himself to ALL of His human creation through Creation, Conscience and His written and spoken words contained in the Bible.

God’s words explain the present horrible state you find yourself in as belonging to a “natural man”.

  • 1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Does this mean your unbelief is excused by Holy God? No! Your stated unbelief only means that currently you are in a hopeless condition of possibly being forever separated from God and His perfect love, joy and peace forever.

  • Romans 1:19-22 . . because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools.

Sadly, for the natural man who willfully chooses to reject God’s general revelation to all people through Creation and Conscience, that man, through his rejection, has chosen to harden his heart. In that condition, Sovereign God, who created and controls all the universe and all light, chooses to NOT specifically reveal Himself in any clearer capacity to such a darkened, God-rejecting heart.

If you continue to choose to reject God’s general revelation about Himself, you have ALREADY been judged guilty and the sentence for all such God-rejectors is explained in Revelation 20.

– Revelation 20:12-15 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

Are you then utterly hopeless because God has NOT revealed Himself to you in a specific revelation beyond His general revelation of Creation and Conscience?

No, no, no and a thousand times NO! God is NOT only perfect in holiness and judgment but simultaneously He is perfect in Mercy and Grace.

Holy God in perfect Mercy and Grace declares to every person the following unassailable truth:

Jeremiah 29:13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

Returning to your Question: If I don’t believe in the existence of God or an afterlife, how can you expect me to understand or accept what you believe?

Answer: The sad truth is that you CANNOT nor do we expect you to understand. You simply cannot understand nor accept the truth we declare because it is impossible for you to do so in your current state of rejecting God’s general revelation about Himself through Creation and Conscience.

In our sadness we were determined to pray for you as we sent this reply. We pray that you would find a desire in your heart to cry out to God, “Lord Jesus Christ, please save me!” We prayed that Sovereign God would choose to break open your hardened darkened heart and shine upon you His specific revelation of Jesus through His Holy Spirit.

  • John 17:3 [Jesus said] And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
  • John 20:31 . . but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

If you would like us to continue to pray that God would specifically reveal Himself to you in saving belief, please indicate this request in your reply.
