Clean the inside part also
Read: Judges 9,10; Psalm 110; Luke 11:29-54
Scripture: Luke 11:39 Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40 You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?
Observation: When Jesus was in the house of a Pharisee, before the Pharisee served him the meal, Jesus wanted to teach him an important lesson related to the practice of Pharisees. It appears that Jesus deliberately did not wash his hands. When the Pharisees were looking at him in surprise as Jesus did not wash his hands, Jesus also told him about the importance of cleaning the inside part. A cup that is cleaned only on the outside part may look nice. However, if it is not washed thoroughly in and out, it would be unfit to use, no matter how costly or beautiful it is. People would notice only the outer part. We see various cultures across the globe give importance to external cleaning. But Jesus made it clear that God first sees our hearts rather than our outward cleanliness.
Application: People say cleanliness is next to godliness. However, they mostly speak about outward cleanliness and are reluctant to speak about inward cleanliness. But Jesus always speaks about the cleanliness of the heart. For Jesus, what comes from the heart is what makes a person unclean and defiles him (Mk.7:20). So, I should give importance to keeping my heart pure and clean rather than focusing on outward cleanliness.
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for this important lesson about cleanliness. Lord, thank you for your blood that purifies my heart from all sin. Help me to walk in your light and truth. Amen.
