The Voice of the LORD

Read: Esther 1-3; Psalm 29; Acts 21:26-40

Scripture: Psalm 29:3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters. 4 The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic.

Observation: Canaanites believed Baal was a powerful god; they considered him the power present in the thunderstorm. In contrast, Psalm 29 illustrates that the power and glory of the Lord are visible and audible on this earth and invites the people to worship God. “The voice of the LORD” occurs seven times in Ps.29. When God spoke to Moses, people saw thunder and lightning and were afraid (Exo.19:16-19). Likewise, the Lord’s voice is often identified with thunder (1 Sam. 7:10; Job 37:4-5; Psalm 18:13; Isa. 30:30-31; Jn12:29). The voice of the Lord is all-powerful and has creative power (Gen.1, Ps.33:6-9). The Bible says, “By God’s word the heavens came into being, and the earth was formed out of the water and by water” (2 Peter 3:5). Although the voice of the LORD reveals the power and glory of God, its primary intention is to communicate and speak with humans and to invite them to worship the creator.

Does God speak today? In the past, God spoke through his prophets and in various ways. But now, he speaks through Jesus Christ. (Heb.1:1,2) We must listen to Jesus’ words (Mt. 17:5; Mk 9:7; Luke 9:35; Heb.12:25). Jesus is the Word of God (Jn.1:1; Rev.19:16). When we read the Bible, the Word of God and commune with him, Jesus speaks to us. In fact, he is willing to talk with us more than we desire to speak with him. Jesus often said, “Whoever has ears, let them hear.” The Bible warns, “If only you would hear his voice, Do not harden your hearts” (Ps.95:8). Let us hear God’s words and put them into practice.

Application: When God comes to speak with me, he asks, “Where are you?” (Gen.3:9). I should not/cannot hide anything from God. I am “dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Rom.6:11). Every creation, even the winds and the waves, obeys the words of Jesus. I must read and listen to the loving words of Jesus. He is the LORD.

Prayer: LORD, you are the living God. My God, thank you for your love. Your words are active and alive. Jesus, your words are full of the Spirit and life. Holy Spirit, help me to remember them everyday and live accordingly. Amen.
